Tyler's Table
Read how this project started and history, below.
How this project evolved:
Like many unique and extra special designs on my web site, the inspiration for the piece is not all from me. Such is the case for this work which I choose to call " Tyler's Table " because he was instrumental in coming forth with the vision.
Here's how that worked:
Tyler's decorator ( Regina ) called me one day inquiring about a large table. We discussed the where to's and wherefores of creating large natural tables and went into considerable detail. Regina then decided to set up a conference call with the client, Tyler. Within that conference call a lot of discussion took place. At some point Tyler mentioned large redwood slabs he had seen. I thought, at that moment about mentioning " one piece " ( huge ) slabs but held back as I was unsure I could produce such large and seasoned ready pieces but, I WAS certain about one thing; this WAS Tyler's vision. I decided to search and put together my contact list accumulated over 16 years and contacted over 50 people in search of the perfect table top. Along the way and without telling Tyler, I asked and asked about " burl ", a MOST unique part of a tree but, to my knowledge one PIECE burl !! And THIS large ! Out of the question, but I asked anyway.. I found 5 pieces of solid huge one piece burl slabs and purchased all of them not really knowing moisture content or details of the intricate character but, confident it would be stunning. I just needed time.. Time to season properly and create the piece. Time to detail it. Which Tyler gave me.
Growth ( bark ) areas filled with clear fill.
History of Tylers Table:
At LEAST 1,000 years old.
I promised Tyler a history. Upon this page I have started that and will finish in the days immediately ahead. Below is the first photo of Tylers root top as it came from the ground in California. As one can see, the root was entirely too large to legally load onto a semi truck. It was cut in half and loaded with excavating equipment.
The "General Sherman" , the biggest amongst them, has a circumference near the ground of 31.1 m or 102.6 ft and is the biggest tree in the world ! His age is estimated at 2000 to 2500 years, and is often called "the largest living thing on earth".
The age of 1,000 years seems a bit far fetched perhaps until one puts it into perspective with the photo's and history of the Giant Redwood, below.
The creation of Tyler's Table, coming soon. Right here.
If you have an interest in a piece of history in the form of large, one piece, solid burl tables. Contact me (mike ) at 785 658 3548, I have several pieces left.
